The general secretary of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), Diosdado Cabello, announced on Monday a mobilization of the Venezuelan people to commemorate the historic struggle of January 23 (1958).
The call seeks to strengthen national unity in defense of the Homeland, according to the explanation given by Cabello during a PSUV press conference.
Cabello made the announcement within the context of the 68th anniversary of the fall of the dictatorship of Marcos Pérez Jiménez and recalled this historical fact by noting that «the political and economic elites betrayed the Venezuelans”, leaving the people «without opinions and without any option.»
«We vindicate January 23 with a beautiful feat of a people united in the defense of their country,» emphasized Cabello.
The PSUV has prepared a schedule of activities for the entire week which will culminate with the massive mobilization of next Friday.
The announcement comes amidst the ongoing mobilization of the Venezuelan people 18 days after the kidnapping of President Nicolás Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores. Cabello affirmed that they have held daily activities in the streets demanding the return of both.
Also, he specially highlighted the mobilizations held last weekend, where the Venezuelan people wrote letters addressed to the President and the First Combatant Woman. These actions are part of the popular expression to demand the immediate release of the leaders and worthy successors of Hugo Chávez.
